We serve our community as a voice for the voiceless, for working families, children, and those struggling to get out of poverty. As issues important to our communities and our clients arise, we need your help in making sure our lawmakers hear us loud and clear and that all voices are heard. Through partnerships, and leveraging our long history working hand in hand with the communities that we serve, our advocacy work helps build stronger communities and a more participatory democracy. Further, we help our partners and participants build their own capacity through our consulting, training and leadership education services. Capstone ensures that all voices are heard as we work to engage communities in finding innovative solutions to poverty.
We offer our participants and supporters numerous advocacy and leadership opportunities including:
- Program governance, such as the Capstone Board of Directors and Head Start Policy Council
- Advisory committees
- Testifying in front of a Legislative committee Program evaluation
- Planning or leading trainings
- Attending legislative receptions or speaking at our annual Legislative event
We provide coaching and support to assist community members in engaging policy makers. We work with people to construct and share their stories and experiences with the greater community. We also encourage self-advocacy, and offer people help in communicating with landlords, creditors, immigration or other officials to resolve issues.
Capstone serves as a member of the Vermont Low Income Advocacy Council and other advocate groups throughout the state. Staff also attend various local community meetings to collaborate with area service providers, churches, private businesses and community members, to represent the interests of low-income families, and to advocate for systems change.
